While we often plan for exciting excursions, many of our exploits occur spontaneously because we are responding to the chances nature offers up. On New Year’s Day this year, a lake near our home had an incredible thawing and freezing cycle create 11 miles of smooth-as-glass ice–a true potential playground (if discovered).
Eureka! What a find! I couldn’t catch up with our little man who skated miles out ahead with his dad and some friends, so the girls and I just played.
We usually get most of our wilderness skating in before the snow falls in mid-December so strapping the skates back on in the backcountry was a real treat. I imagine how many moments like this that are just waiting to be found.
Will they remember the year the lake lay bare on its first day?
I can’t believe it matters.
